to blog or not to blog?

I get the purpose of blogging for this class. We further discuss class topics, mainly. But why do people blog outside of discussion topics? Or why do they blog on topics at all? Isn't that what discussion boards are for?

I thought that blogs were pretty standardly online journals; a place to write down any private or intimate thoughts that you may have as well as daily activities. But wait? Aren't journals private? I remember writing in a journal when I was younger and freaking out because I couldn't find a hiding place discreet enough for it. So why do people today think it's not only acceptable but perfectly normal to write such intimate thoughts that can be viewed by not only people you know and see on a daily basis, but complete strangers as well?

Yeah I can level with you on this one. I really never saw the point in blogging or using a diary. The only reason I could think of was something to tell your secrets to.

Then I thought what's the point of writing secrets in something other people can find? Those "locked" books can be broken into; those "private" blogs can be hacked into. Now some stranger you do not even know can make life Hell for you.

I agree with you, I would never have created a blog if not for this class. I don't see the need for a blog if you are a part of a discussion group. And please, some of the blogs are way out there. I think some people blog just to read their own words, like those people who are talking , yet everyone looks at them and wonders just who it is they're talking to?

I kept a journal in junior high and high school and I definitely kept it a secret from everyone. Well, people knew I kept one because they would see me writing in it in study hall, but no one ever read it. That's one thing I don't like / don't get about blogging. I wouldn't let my family or friends ever read my journal entries, let alone complete strangers - or even teachers, bosses, co-workers, etc. And the moment I caught my boyfriend reading it, I gave it up because I felt violated. I did not have anything to hide, but those were my personal thoughts - kind of like therapy I guess, only really cheap.

I agree that I do not see why we need to be blogging on here AND discussing on the discussion board. It's like washing the dishes by hand BEFORE you put them into the dishwasher!

However, I can see how some blogs can be interesting. For example, I have contemplated starting a blog about different real estate issues (I am a Realtor, and my website is mccolly.com/jlindemer, hint hint nudge nudge!!!! :) ), and a blog would be a way for me to inform others while giving my opinion on different issues. This would be more like an opinion column you would find in a newspaper, and less like a journal or diary.

But again, there are many areas where I don't see the need for blogs.

I remember, a few years ago, one of my friends (more like an acquaintance) from my old job started writing a blog on MySpace. I subscribed to it because I didn't want to be rude, but before that I had only heard of blogs written by journalists, or famous people, etc. Her first blog was titled something like, "I Hate Mean People".
She was still a server at the restaurant where we met and she basically went on in this blog writing about the lack of common decency in some people. I thought it was kind of odd that she would have a blog (thinking, "who, besides me, is reading this")? However, I guess the point is, she was able to vent her frustrations and probably felt a lot better afterwards. If you are writing to an audience (or think you are), it may feel more worth it. If you just write to a private journal it may feel pointless because no one else sees your words.

I don't get the whole blogging thing either. To me, the idea of journaling, like most everyone else, seems as if it should be personal. I think that if people want to vent or discuss or whatever, then go ahead. I'm just not sure if they should be putting up stuff that they don't want others seeing.

Randy's right. What's the point of writing secrets that could even potentially be found out by others? I don't understand it.
